About Us
Thank you for
interest in Musical Reflections as your DJ and MC company.
Laura, my wife and
I would like to take this opportunity to introduce you to our company
family, our background, and our commitment to you. My name is Derek
Haas and I am a DJ, MC, and entertainer. I have been in the music
business since I was 9 years old when I had my first piano concerto. I
have played the drums in jazz bands, rock bands, country bands, and
church praise teams since I was 9 years old. Music and entertaining
people is my life.
I have been a DJ since I was 12 years old when I did my own birthday party. I worked out a deal with a local music equipment store owner that I could use one of his sound systems. I would pay him half of the money I made from the job and the money would go towards the purchase of the equipment. I would pick up the equipment before the job and return it to him the next day. He kept the equipment until I got it paid off. Thank God for that incredible man that would give a 14 year old that kind of opportunity.
My first "official" paid DJ job was my own middle school dance when I was in the 7th grade. After that, I did all of the other middle school dances in the area. I did my first high school dance when I was in the 8th grade and started doing all of the other high schools in the area that year. I was 15 years old when I did my first high school prom. Due to the law, I had to wait until I was 16 years old to get a business license and that is when I started my own company. The business took off and I had to have my friends start helping me with everything from setting up to tearing down. I also did my first wedding ceremony and reception. I ended up doing 30 weddings after that first one, it was a big family with lots and lots of friends. At 18 years old, I started working in the nightclub business. I ran sound and lights for the bands, DJ'ed in-between sets, MC'ed for them, and some times even played drums with them. I was noticed by a couple of club owners and they hired me to DJ at their nightclubs. Since then, I have DJed at a gillion nightclubs all over the world with every music format on the planet.
On July 24, 1990 I appeared on Good Morning, America with two other teenagers to talk about how to start your own business as a teenager. The other boy was the creator of the "Earth" bag, which is a burlap reusable grocery bag. The girl had written a book about how to teach other teenagers how to study, her dad was a book publisher from Florida. The "Green" room was a humbling experience because the other two were talking about their "press" releases. I thought "What am I doing here?, I am just a DJ. Joan Lunden was the host at the time and for the first time in my life I was star struck. It was an awesome experience!
I have worked for the Marriott and Double Tree Hotels as both the company programming nightclub DJ, Promotions Manager, and Banquet Entertainment Director. We were the in-house DJ company for both hotels in California. Weddings became my specialty when I started working for Horn blower Cruises in San Diego, California. Cruise ships are fun and really test your "entertainer ship". In October 2006, we started working at the Grand Chapel as the preferred DJ company and have been working there ever since. In January 2008, we started working at the Wichita Ice Center as their Friday night in-house DJ company.
My son, Dominick (age 14), started his DJing career at the Wichita Ice Center every Friday night, Andover prom, and an alternative prom. He is available for middle school, high school dances, proms, birthday parties, etc. You can come check him out every Friday night at the Wichita Ice Center.
